To those who are not to conversant with marketing and advertising, this topic might seem confusing, after all they both ball down to creating awareness. Most people do not know the difference between this two tool, so I have written this short note explaining the meaning and difference between Marketing and Advertising
So what is marketing and what is advertising?
Marketing is the act of creating awareness, while advertising is a way of creating awareness. The use of marketing led to the creation of advertisement, in other words without marketing, advertising won’t exist.
Marketing has to do with the act of convincing people to purchase any good a services, using specific tools, and not forcefully imposing them to take the action of purchase, then I would say that is bullying.
Marketing, has to do with persuading, convincing sometimes educating someone or people about a particular product with the sole aim of making a sale. Or taking an action. The act of educating people about a product is usually known as Public relations, and is also a tool of marketing
Marketers employ various tools to achieve their sole aim which is generation of sales. Sometimes they even employ more than one tool at a time to make sure that their goal is achieved.
Marketers go the extra mile by trying to understand consumer’s behavior, knowing their needs, location, age, reasons why they neglect a product for another, their problems and also how to solve them.
Marketers go through a lot of process or researches to get all the details about consumers.
Personally I see marketers as the middle man between a brand and its consumers, because a company can manufacture an awesome product but would lack the skill to convince consumers that it is an awesome product. I have seen situations where companies produce a good product but on getting to the market, still loose consumers to other brands who are even selling mediocre products. Marketers play an important role in the world of buying and selling, as a matter of fact, without marketers, two things are possible, either there wouldn’t be buying and selling, or the buying or selling process would be very boring.
Marketing goes deeper than what most people think. Marketing actually begins from the packaging of a company and a brand down to the friendly gesture a sales personnel gives after a sale.
Marketers employ advertising as a tool to communicate to a group of people, eliminating the stress of going to them individually to convincing them to purchase a product. The act of going to people personally to convince them about a product is also a marketing tool known as Personal selling.
Advertising on the other hand is a tool of marketing, used to show case a product or service to a larger number of people at once, showcasing a product or service is done after proper research has been conducted on the product, which entails packaging and designs. Typically Advertising occurs when the finished product is ready and available for sale. Advertising is more or less like the final face, because it shows the already perfected work to the audience, and as such is used as group communication to create a call to action, to convince them to get the product.
Advertising is done using various medium, e.g. print (newspapers, fliers, handbills), electronic both visual and sound (television, radio) and new media (social media; Facebook, twitter, instagram, etc.)
Other tools used by marketers are public relations, sales promotion, direct selling, etc.
Advertising come in different form, from, print, to electronic to new media, even orally. Advertising is seen everywhere around us, sometimes even a little sign post can lead to a call to action, while sometimes it takes a paid advert on television to get the desired result.
Advertisement is just a tool used by marketers to get to a larger crowd, as there are other tools employed by them, while marketing is the act of employing a marketing tool, e.g. Advertisement, to get to a larger crowd, with the sole purpose of generating sale.
So please don’t get it confused.
